      Methane’s short term potency poses a serious climate challenge and methane emissions are on the rise. In this high-level event the World Bank Group, other MDBs and private investors showcased current efforts and plans to expand their focus on methane emissions over the next few years.

      Last year, 121 countries, including many World Bank clients and representing 50% of global human-caused methane emissions pledged to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30% by 2030. The World Bank is partnering with EBRD and EIB and other partners to cut methane emissions.

      John Podesta: Only 2% of investment in mitigation is going to methane reduction.

      Xie Zhenhua: Last year China signed the Glasgow methane pledge and has a draft national strategy to strictly control methane emissions in energy, agriculture, waste treatment.

      Xie Zhenhua: There are two major issues to reduce methane: 1) need for newer technologies; 2) finance

      Odile Renaud-Basso: Methane is emitted by big number of small organizations. Policies and regulations need to scale work in this area.

      John Podesta: Efforts should also target garbage, which is important in this context.

      Werner Hoyer: We must monitor and measure. We need to rely more on precise data.
