Dr. Mai Alkaila is a doctor, diplomat, and politician, and the first woman to hold the position of Health Minister of West Bank and Gaza. She holds a PhD in Public Health and Health Administration.
A physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Alkaila worked as a lecturer at Al-Quds University in the Public Health Department, and at UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) as head of the Motherhood and Childhood Program.
In 1994, she participated as a delegate at the World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. She later served as ambassador to Chile and to Italy.
Dr. Alkaila studied medicine at the University of Granada in Spain, then specialized in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of California, Berkeley, obtaining a master's degree. Her PhD is from the University of Chile.
