Mr. el-Garhy started his career back in 1981 at Chase National Bank, which was transformed into CIB in 1986. He then worked at CIB for ten years from 1986 to 2006. In 2006 he was selected as part of the team mandated to establish and manage Commercial International Investment Company (CIIC) that covered the horizon of investment management and investment banking. During 1999 to 2002 he headed investment banking operations at Fleming CIIC company that was established in partnership with investment bank Rubert Fleming and Co.
In 2002 , he joined EFG Hermes as board member and Managing Director as well as Co-headed its investment banking operations. In December 2004 he was selected to become Vice Chairman and Managing Director of National Investment Bank reporting directly to the Minister of Finance. He assumed such post and function until end March 2013. During May 2013 - February 2016, Mr. ElGarhy became board member and Managing Director of Citadel Capital holding. In March 2016 , Mr. El-Garhy was appointed as Egypt Minister of Finance
