Wayan Koster is an Indonesia politician who served as the Governor Bali since 2018. Prior to his role as Governor, he was a member of the House of Representatives for almost three terms representing his home province, and a senior researcher at the Ministry of Education and Culture. During his terms in the parliament, he spent more than 14 years in Commission X (ten), covering education, culture, sports, tourism, and the creative economy where he was actively involved and led some key legislative products including film law, legislative law, and village law. He is a champion that pushed traditional village (desa adat) to be incorporated in Indonesia’s village law. His strong experiences in education, culture, tourism, and creative economy have built the foundation of his governing vision of “Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali”, which means maintaining the sanctity and harmony of Bali’s nature to create a prosperous Bali.
Governor Koster graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and secured a doctorate in education management from the Jakarta State University.
His professional, academic and public service experiences have led him to become one of the most progressive governors in Indonesia, especially with his efforts in tackling climate risks at the regional level. He is the first Governor in Indonesia that issued three Governor Regulations of clean energy, plastic ban, and electric vehicle in his first 100-days.
