Professor Tawana Kupe, Vice-Principal of the University of the Witwatersrand. He is responsible for the daily running of the University and the coordination of operations across all Executive portfolios. Professor Kupe served as the Executive Dean of the Wits Faculty of Humanities for six years (2007-2012) and was Head of the Wits School of Literature and Language Studies (2004 – 2006) and the founding Head of the Media Studies department in 2002. As Dean, he conceptualized the Wits Arts and Literature Experience, a major annual arts festival. During his tenure as Dean, a new institute and several Centers were created, and the Faculty experienced a complete turnaround in its research productivity. Professor Kupe holds a BA Honors degree and Masters in English from the University of Zimbabwe, as well as a DPhil qualification in Media Studies from the University of Oslo, Norway. He edited a book titled Broadcasting Policy and Practice in Africa, co-edited a book titled Go Home or Die Here on xenophobia (with two other Wits academics), aside from an array of book chapters and articles in refereed journals.
