Martin Jäger was appointed State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in March 2018. From October 2016 to March 2018, he served as State Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, Digitisation and Migration in the German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. Prior to that, he worked for several years at the Federal Ministry of Finance, where he headed the political staff and served as spokesperson to the Minister. From 2013 to 2014, he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Afghanistan.
After his studies in ethnology, political science and philosophy, Martin Jäger completed the Foreign Service training course, followed by many years of service at the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Chancellery. From 2008 to 2013, he headed the Global External Affairs department at Daimler AG.
Martin Jäger chairs the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Board of Trustees of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and is a member of the Council of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) foundation (German Institute for International and Security Affairs).
