Akiko Kitamura is a Health Specialist in the Health, Nutrition and Population Global Practice. She has worked in public health research as well as development programs in resource-limited countries, across the Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Africa, particularly in emergency and humanitarian contexts. Prior to joining the Bank in 2019, Akiko was a community health specialist for a UN agency, UNRWA, in Gaza, West Bank, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, overseeing its operations in 150 health centers for the displaced population. Applying both quantitative and qualitative approaches, Akiko has published over 20 papers, including in the Lancet. She currently works on World Bank lending operations and some of the key analytical initiatives, including the current health systems resilience work.
