A Seat at the Table: Creating Opportunity for Vulnerable and Often Excluded Populations with Chef José Andrés
Simplify, Adapt, and Act Like a Startup, Chef José Andrés Advises Development Community The development community should simplify its goals, focus more on adaptation than on planning, and behave more like startups, award-winning chef and humanitarian José Andrés told a standing-room-only audience at the World Bank Friday. After the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Andrés formed the charity World Central Kitchen, went to Haiti, and began serving meals. Almost 10 years later, World Central Kitchen is still in Haiti and has amassed 26 kitchens, 25,000 volunteers, and almost 4 million meals served. The group of volunteer chefs has worked in several other countries, including serving more than 3.7 million meals to the people of Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Andrés—who had just returned from a week helping communities in Mozambique that were destroyed by flooding after Cyclone Idai—offered several lessons learned from his charity work to the development community: •             First, we all must simplify our goals. In the process of ...

Beyond Borders: A Look at the Venezuelan Exodus
No Precedent: The Venezuelan Exodus The unprecedented migration from Venezuela is the largest and fastest displacement of vulnerable people in the world after the Syrian crisis. An estimated 3.7 million people have left Venezuela as of April 2019, according to the International Organization for Migration, and are now residing in neighboring countries including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, and other countries across the region. Every day, thousands more are crossing the border, sometimes walking for weeks, fleeing the severe economic and social deterioration in Venezuela that has led to a humanitarian crisis. This massive exodus IS the second largest displacement in the world and is unprecedented in the recent history of Latin America and the Caribbean. A high-level panel of experts discussed the implications, and potential opportunities, for both migrants and the countries and communities hosting them. They also analyzed how the region can manage this massive exodus and mobilize international support to complement the efforts of the countries in the region. The ...

Learning Matters: Why We Need A Learning Revolution
Learning Matters: Why We Need a Learning Revolution.   While many countries have made tremendous progress in getting children into the classroom — much more remains to be done to ensure that students are effectively learning and being equipped with the necessary skills for the jobs of the future. In her opening remarks, Vice President for Human Development Annette Dixon laid out the challenge; 60% of primary school children in developing countries fail to achieve minimum proficiency in reading, writing, and basic math. She stressed that to effectively respond, countries need to know the state of their education quality and how far they are from ensuring that all students learn.   In the first discussion, UK’s Secretary of State for International Development Penny Mordaunt implored countries to focus on improving learning outcomes and technical education with private sector support. UNICEF’s Executive Director Henrietta Fore stressed the need for a “learning backpack” consisting of literacy, transferrable skills, entrepreneurship, language skills, combined with digital ...

Global Launch of the Impact Principles

IFC launches impact investing principles   Sixty global investors came together to adopt the Operating Principles for Impact Management—a new market standard for impact investing in which investors seek to deliver measurable, positive impact for society alongside financial returns. The Principles bring greater transparency, credibility, and discipline to the impact investing market, addressing concerns about “impact-washing.” IFC developed the Principles in collaboration with leading asset managers, asset owners, asset allocators, development banks, and financial institutions, including a three-month public stakeholder consultation. Impact investing represents a significant opportunity to mobilize additional resources from the private sector to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris climate goals. An IFC report launched on April 8 estimates that investor appetite for impact investing is as high as $26 trillion. This includes $21 trillion in publicly traded stocks and bonds, and $5 trillion in private equity, non-sovereign private debt, and venture capital.

Melting Himalayan Glaciers: People, Environment, Economies
Melting of the Himalayan glaciers, caused by climate change and black carbon from pollution, poses major risks to the people, environment and economies in South Asia and beyond. A vital source of water for eight countries from Afghanistan to Myanmar, Himalayan glaciers store 10 percent of the world’s freshwater and support irrigation, energy, and the livelihoods of 750 million people living downstream. Left unchecked, glacier melting will trigger a higher loss of biodiversity, lower economic growth, and more acute food and water shortages in the future. This growing threat and solutions to curb shrinking glaciers and foster a sustainable mountain economy will underpin this event’s proceedings. Expect fast-paced data-blitz presentations, cutting-edge research, and a vibrant discussion with policymakers, practitioners, and researchers, including a live interaction with a National Geographic Society team from Mount Everest. In partnership with the National Geographic Society  Moderation by Manisha Natarajan, Journalist and Anchor at CNBCTV18 (India).
