@alancmckinnon: The pandemic has accelerated most established longer-term supply chain trends: the growth of online retailing, supply chain collaboration, and the impact on logistics employment -- many people working on logistics have been deemed essential workers. An exception is logistics skill shortages; the pandemic could help address the shortage of talented people in the logistics sector.

@alancmckinnon: Another trend being accelerated by COVID-19 is digitalization, which includes online freight procurement platforms, Internet of things, smart road infrastructure, and digital twinning. There's no question that it will be transformational in logistics. Also, many are predicting that 3-D printing will be transformational in the longer term, causing a major reconfiguration of companies' value chains.

@tmonballiu: Digitization allowed us to duplicate our command and control centers in 24 hours to make sure our ports were operating in a safe environment. It will help us overcome future pandemics. In addition to businesses, the authorities learned an important lesson by working more in digital and moving away from the environment they were accustomed to.

@MargiVanGogh: We've had to be extremely agile in our own capabilities to adopt digital technology. There's the assessment of risk, determining what we can do about it, and prioritizing the investments in technology that enable us to address those risks. Those investments are not only financial -- they come from collaboration. Will that collaboration be sustained beyond this pandemic? Ultimately, building a trust-based environment that enables us to adopt technology is going to require that collaboration.

@MargiVanGogh: When you look at the companies who use the ecosystem of transport, companies have optimized supply chains to drive efficiency and used year-over-year cost reduction as a metric to measure success. The pandemic is among several events of the past few years that have led to a changing risk profile.
