Referencing Carmen Reinhart’s previous research on debt distress cycles, President Malpass shares a sobering statistic: it can take as long as seven years for countries to reach a point where they are in a debt reduction process that is actually helpful. One of the key things we’re trying to do in this debt distress cycle, he says, is to get to the point of debt reduction sooner so that countries can have light at the end of the tunnel.
