Unfortunately, internet cost is relatively high across many emerging markets.  A key issue is the lack of underlying digital infrastructure - "last mile" (connection to home), "middle mile" (e.g. metro fiber optic networks), and "backbone" (e.g. international fiber).  IFC is funding all three of these areas in emerging markets by supporting competitive private companies. Our aim is to increase the supply of this infrastructure and help promote competition to improve quality of service and intensify competition, ultimately lowering prices. To support extension of the internet in Africa, we have financed Kenyan-based WIOCC, which owns a metro, backbone and submarine fiber network providing global links.  We aim to do more in the future.
