What support could the World Bank give to micro-industry, starting at the grassroots? The resources are nearly everywhere, both naturally occurring and in traditional production processes. The poor tend to be entirely capable but may be unable to write an application. The Nobel laureate, Abhijeet Banerjee asked as an imperative, “Most importantly, what idea is bigger than the notion that the poorest of the poor have enough talent to be self-sufficient?” How do we overcome the widespread notion that the poor are ignorant or undisciplined? Many in the developing world are angry with their governments, in fairness or not, that while resources are all around them development is not bringing about prosperity.
