To support extension of mobile service and to increase competition, IFC supported a broadband wireless operator, Red Compartida, in Mexico. The network is providing services using an all-IP network and 4G LTE technology on the 700-megahertz spectrum band. Red Compartida will be deployed in seven regions, including those that are home to Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico’s second and third largest cities. In addition to improving service for current cell customers, it will make the technology accessible to people who have never had these types of services,  and support health and education sectors.

According to GSMA, around 1 billion people globally are not covered by mobile broadband networks, while around 3 billion live within the footprint of a network but are not accessing mobile internet services. Additional investments in mobile network expansion have helped to reduce the coverage gap, but more than 40% of the population in low and middle-income countries will still be offline by 2025. IFC is working with mobile operators around the world to support increased rural deployments, including Vodacom in Africa and Robi Axiata in Bangladesh.
