This event celebrates the success of the 40-year partnership of the World Bank's Africa Region, WHO, Merck & Co., and many other agencies to control river blindness. The partnership has freed up 25 million hectares of arable land, enough to feed 17 million people. The challenge now is to build on this approach and help countries in Africa to control or eliminate the other preventable neglected tropical diseases.

The control and elimination of debilitating diseases such as elephantiasis, trachoma, schistosomiasis and various intestinal parasites can help people escape poverty and help countries to better harness their potential for economic growth and prosperity.
