H.E. Mrs. Maria Rubiales de Chamorro is the Permanent Representative of Nicaragua to the United Nations. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Rubiales de Chamorro was Director-General of the Governmental Promotion Agency in Managua. She was Director of the Tourism Development Company in San Juan del Sur, a post to which she was promoted after serving as Sales Manager from 1990 to 2000.

Ms. Rubiales de Chamorro’s diplomatic experience includes service from 1986 to 1990 as Director-General of Foreign Policy for Asia, Africa and the Non-Aligned Countries in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a previous stint at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as Minister Counsellor between 1981 and 1986. She concurrently represented Nicaragua at the Non-Aligned Movement (1981-1990) and in the Security Council (1982-1983).

Beginning her diplomatic career in 1979 as First Secretary at Nicaragua’s Embassy in the Dominican Republic, she held the same position in Costa Rica from 1980 to 1981.
Ms. Rubiales de Chamorro holds a degree in sociology from Maryville College of the Sacred Heart in Saint Louis, United States.
